Where do chickens pee from?

Chickens don’t pee the same way humans do, and they don’t even have a separate hole for peeing!

Chickens (and most other birds) have only one single opening for absolutely everything, and its cool scientific name is the cloaca. Even the eggs come out of this exact same door!

  • Chickens do not have a bladder to store liquid pee.
  • Their kidneys turn their pee into a thick, white paste.
  • When a chicken goes to the bathroom, this white paste and their regular poop come out of the cloaca at the exact same time. So, the white part you see in chicken poop is actually their pee!

This teaches us how clever nature can be. Because birds need to be super light so they can fly (even if chickens are a bit clumsy at it!), they can’t afford to carry around a heavy tank of water inside their bellies.

The next time you see bird poop on a car window and notice a white spot, you will know the secret: that white stuff is actually the bird’s pee! 🐔💦
